Staying healthy during Christmas

Well it’s just 3 days away before Christmas 2013 and Jamaicans are preparing for wonderful large cooked meals. Most Jamaicans do not realize that the food they consume during Christmas is usually high in fat and calories, but taking a closer look has revealed that there can be some hidden health benefits too.

Very few Jamaicans eat turkey as their main dish during Christmas, but some studies show that Turkey contains high levels of protein but without the large quantities of saturated fat found in some red meat, it also has lower cholesterol levels than pork, chicken or beef.

It has been said that some Jamaican vegetables like cabbage, may help reduce the risk of some cancers, as they contain high levels of antioxidants. Christmas in Jamaica should not be complete without dark chocolate, which is a good source of magnesium and contains a variety of bio-active compounds believed to lead to good cardiovascular health and prevent joint problems.
However chocolate is a high-calorie food and should be eaten in small moderation.

What healthy foods are you planning to eat this Christmas?

First of, chocolate eaten in small amounts esp dark chocolate is hard to do. It is my main indulgence. But I am looking forward to a number of roasted items - pork and beef in particular, and i do not need to mention sorrel and cake. Christmas celebrations are really not complete without them. My main items this Christmas when it comes to eating healthy will be lots and lots of vegetables! Love my vegies!

CHRISTMAS IS NOT CHRISTMAS WITHOUT FATTY FOODS! if you do feel guilty after eating all that delicously goo food, do penance in the new year. I am sure God would not smite you for being slightly guttenous...

FOOOOOOOOOD, FOOOOOOOOOOOD & MORE FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD this Christmas!!!! I really should be more careful with the foods I eat nowadays. I jumped from 110 to 127 in just 7 months. I really don't wanna get the "flabs", I wanna maintain my cute, petite, model type body so as I eat I will ensure that I burn off the excess calories. Staying healthy, doing regular checks-ups should be our GOAL this season! =) **nice blog Richard**

Well in terms of food during Christmas time, its not really a grand affair for me. My family is extremely small (my mother & myself) and we usually take that as the day off. In fact we dine out on that day. For this year though , I think I'll be making a homemade feast. Not sure what's on the menu yet, but it should be very interesting though as I don't usually coform to tradition (rice and peas on sunday and soup on saturday for example).

Many people do not have that option, especially those who live in high-rise apartments in the middle of city centers where space is limited. For them, one other option I've heard about recently is vertical farming. The concept of building large energy-efficient structures within urban centers to feed most of the population will make cities more self-sufficient as to no longer rely on imported food products. It would also cut down greatly on freshwater usage and agricultural runoff. Thanks.

Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. A healthy diet should include whole grains, lean protein, vegetables and fruits, dairy products such as yogurt, and healthy fats. Consult your physician or a dietitian to help plan your diet. Thanks.

It is very good diet habits are followed by Jamaicans,as they not eat turkey and most of them include cabbage in their diet. The high turkey intake can raise your acid level and affects your digestive system.
