HIV AIDS

Most Jamaicans don’t know that a person doesn’t actually "get" AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). People sometimes get infected with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), and later they might develop AIDS. You can get infected with HIV from anyone who's infected, even if they don't look very sick and even if they haven't been tested and confirmed HIV-positive yet. The semen, blood, vaginal fluid, and breast milk of people infected with HIV has enough of the virus in it to infect others.

         Most times the HIV virus is transmitted by:

·        Having sexual intercourse with someone who is infected;
·        Being born infected because the mother is infected, or drinking the breast milk of a woman who is infected.
·        Sharing a needle with someone who's infected;

Things Jamaican’s should keep in mind

Your risk of getting HIV or passing it to someone else depends on many factors. Do you know what they are? Here are a few health tips.
1.      Use a condom
2.      Abstaining from sex
3.      Talking about HIV with your partner
4.      Getting tested

It’s simple as ABC (A: Abstain B: Be faithful C: Condoms)

Have you been tested for HIV AIDS in 2010? Leave a comment.

Last month on world AIDS day I finally got enough courage to do my first HIV test of the year and that will be a day I will nevrer forget.The fear of the unknown was what scared me the most as just one night of pleasure could lead up to your hold life in pain and wished we could turn back the hands of time; as my grandmother would say if me did know..After thay took my blood,that 1 hour of wating and taking calls felt like eternity.Finally when I got my results a sigh of releif came upon me and everyone if I must say please protect yourself before you reck yourself.

I have not taken an HIV test in 2010. Crazy, you may say. The fact is that I am SO TERRIFIED OF NEEDLES. I, however, accompany my partner to have his regular HIV tests taken every 6 months. I figure that since he is the only one that I am with, if he is negative, I will be too. Kinda crazy too but it's my strategy. So far, it has been working for the past 8 years. :-)

HIV/AIDS is serious people! We need to protect ourselves and others out there who might not be in the know. Get tested regularly so that you can be in the know and encourage your partners as well to do so.

Being tested for AIDS is a very important part of your life especially when you are sexually active....i think one of the main reason for us as jamaicans is that we fear knowing that we have AIDS "just saying" we fear going to do the test and then hearing "hey you have AIDS, but guess what life goes on with treatment and taking care of yourself you will live long enough"....well people dont want to hear that...so they just wont take the test...but personally i think person should be in the know so if they are infected its good to know so they can start taking care of themselves....

its simple if u and your spouse take an hiv test and your both nagative. then u have nothing to worry about, as long as you can trust he/she. caz personaly i think aids is here to punish those who cannot be faithful to one spouse in a relationship. what u sow is what u reap.....

On December 14,2010 I took the courage to do my real HIV test with the Micro Labs and from that day till today I'm a happy woman who is always smiling.I wasn't scared because I was confident enough that I am safe. I not only did HIV test but an entire BLOOD TEST based on my doctors recommendation.It wasn't a long process but what was shocking, I told the nurse to use my left arm as I find that stronger but what was shocking,was the fact that she found the vein and for 2mins going NO BLOOD.I started to worr,so she then go to the right arm and still the same,,she tapped it once and the blood start to sprew just a little which was odd but in the end A LOT of tubes were filled.WHEW!!wAITED FOR THE RESULTS FOR 5 BUSINESS DAYS...I visited my dr waited and waited and she gave me some advise all results leaving the HIV for last,SO i BEGAN TO WONDER..bUT WHEN SHE GOT THERE i'M PERFECTLY negative.AMEN!!I began smiling and was happy to share my result to everyone..It's a good thing to get tested and know your results..^.^

HIV/AIDs is a commonly discussed topic. Many times I've heard guys say "it was created by white men to kill the black", whether it's fact or just an opinion, it still means you should wrap it up..If you can't then do without...Real easy and simple. If you do believe that it was created to kill you slowly, why walk with your eyes wide open in the trap???? Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.. Educate yourself people, ALWAYS be in the "Know", no guys is too handsome and caring not to be infected. Don't get me wrong, women have it too, don't be blinded by how tempting her body is or how intelligent she may seem.. Be Safe, Be Smart, Wrap It Up!!

It is a scary fact to know how many people are unaware of the difference between HIV and AIDS. Many people are of the impression or belief that people infected with the HIV virus show signs of the infection. Ministry of Health has implemented informative forums I however believe there are much more that can be done with informing our FUTURE about this terrible disease......monthly session at secondary school(especially co-ed school, community educational fun-day)

Having to do one each year is ensuring that I stay healthy. My health comes first. Abstaining from sex can be very difficult therefore the other on the list is effective. Always protect myself and my partner!
